Winter tidings all! The last 10 days over here at the Fur have been action packed to say the least. The initial Chow Nasty sessions with some of the baddest musicians on the planet has finally wound down…for now. If hosting Bernie Worrell, Fred Wesley, T.M. Stevens, Bryan Mantia, Blackbyrd McKnight, Rob Poole, and mike Rinta wasn’t enough we also had the pleasure of recording Dawn Silva, and Gail Muldrow. Dawn is one of The Brides of Funkenstein and sang with Sly and The Family Stone prior to that. Gail is from Graham Central Station and The Family Stone. Whoa! Baaaaaaaad!
These fine women dropped by to bless Chow Nasty’s forthcoming album along with another badass vocalist named Lara. It was a party up in the studio during the session. Everybody present witnessed something wonderful. The whole studio was jumping by the end of the day; vibing hard! Skin & Bones were there along with Bernie Worrell and the whole Chow Nasty crew. Vocal parts were being worked out on the fly…these ladies have SOUL ya’ll!!!

Thanks 2 the whole Different Fur Crew once again. Nic Pope was at the helm of ProTools with Patrick Brown engineering. We get it done!

Monday and Tuesday we had the pleasure of hosting Socialibrium and friends. Socialibrium consists of T.M. Stevens, BRAIN, Blackbyrd McKnight, and Bernie Worrell. Rob Poole of P-Funk was also present for the entire session. For those that don’t know; all these cats are world-class musicians. It IS GOING DOWN AT THE FUR! Thanks again to the members of the Different Fur squad. We had Aaron Burnham at the ProTools helm for the first day with Pat Elliott providing support. Tuesday we had Pat Elliott manning the helm for the first half of the session. Patrick Brown was at the boards while the maniacs rehearsed for their show at Great American Music Hall. For those that weren’t there it was naaaaaasty!

The production duo Skin & Bones were presented with the beautiful opportunity to lace one of Socialibrium’s tracks with a nasty verse. You know they had to get in there for a picture!

During the course of this past weekend Chow Nasty was in session recording one of the funkiest horn sections ever. We’re talking 5 trombones being lead by Fred Wesley himself. The players comprising the section were Jamie Dubberly, Scott Knippelmier, Luke Kirley, Fred Wesley, and Mike Rinta. Bernie Worrell was at the helm of production along with Skin & Bones.
Scott K. gets props for acting on the idea of having an all trombone horn section. On the second day the bones were joined by a baritone sax…WHOA! We had Nic Pope working the boards. Patrick Brown was responsible for getting a super fortified sound.
It was seriously going down people. FONKY! NASTY! WHOA!…on the second day we even had the pleasure of being paid a visit by an acapella group made of sugar, spice, and everything nice. They sang us some carols…thanks ladies…so nice!

Thanks 2 the whole Different Fur crew for helping this session go off proper! The saga continues!

Bernie Worrell was in the building last night!
He had his first pow-wow slash meeting of the minds with Skin & Bones. These wild people are co-producing Chow Nasty’s upcoming album. All involved are having a wonderful experience, and Bernie will be returning to continue the creative process. Word has it Skin & Bones got their wigs flipped in a major way. Bernie grabbed Chow Nasty before the end of the night and had them listen to what had ensued during the course of the session. It’s fair to say they were getting their minds blown too!
Look out folks! Something freaky is underway!
Thanks 2 Pat Elliott, and Nic Pope for their technical assistance during the tail end of their marathon week!
-Paavo
Note: For those of you who aren’t familiar with Bernie’s name you’re probably familiar with his work. He is the original keyboardist from Parliament Funkadelic. Channeling cosmic energies that resulted in such timeless hits as “Flashlight“, and “Atomic Dog” amongst, many, many others with that outfit. He was also the musical director during the Talking Heads “Stop Making Sense” tour, and played an integral role in a number of albums for that group. Listen to hits such as “Burning Down The House“, and you’ll hear his signature touches. For in depth rundowns check his DISCOGS page, and or his WIKI.

These are videos taken at the corner of 19th and Valencia at 8pm November 4th… immediately after John Mccain conceded. This is our neighborhood… and why we love it.
The first one is a great lead in to the rest…

Weekly update from the studio here…

Saturday and Sunday, will.i.am and Poet (as paavo wrote previously) dropped in to work on some new tracks!
Pat, Nic & Tomas held it down for this last minute session, and everything worked out great.

Monday! We had Black Kids in the studio with Dennis The Menace/KUSF doing a live session… keep an ear out on Menaces Attic for that one soon.
Afterwards, most of the studio crew headed over to The Great American Music Hall (one of my favorite venues) to watch The Virgins and Black Kids hit the stage… good show good fun good looks (and when I say good looks, I’m talking about myself of course)

SF Weekly has an article about the death of big studios… (check the article here)… and a music awards section that includes artists like The Morning Benders (Indie Rock/Pop) Rupa & The April Fishes (International) and Tussle (Experimental Etc.)… all of whom we’ve had the pleasure of working with.
Congratulations guys!
Also this week,
Flexxbronco is in here, and next week they are playing a show at the Knockout.
I’ll be there, you should be too!

Yes. This guy decided to stop by and get some work done late last night. He cranked for a few hours then decided he’d come back today. Pat Elliott is engineering, and Nic Pope has his 6 while Thomas maintains hawk like vigilance at the desk. That’s what happens over here. Organic cookies and bangin’ music FOREVER! Holla at yo people…
